Between 2017 and 2023, the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sector contributed the largest share to West Nusa Tenggara’s national growth, valued at Rp 4.880 trillion. In Sumbawa, high-value commodities such as bird’s nests and processed seafood account for a significant portion of this output. These industries sustain local livelihoods and have strong export potential, yet many producers remain constrained by incomplete legal permits, underdeveloped branding, and limited market reach.
To address these barriers, KUMPUL, in collaboration with local government and private sector partners, introduced programs designed to improve market readiness. The initiatives focused on legal compliance, brand positioning, and market access, enabling micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to compete beyond their immediate surroundings.
A Rise after a Fall

Fikriadi Ayub, owner of Owpiick Swift’s Nest, joined Bale Berdaya after restarting his business with minimal resources. Initially, his swiftlet nest drinks were packaged in plastic bottles, sold locally, and lacked the domestic and export permits required for broader distribution. The packaging limited his product’s positioning, and market expansion beyond Sumbawa was not viable.
Through Bale Berdaya, he transitioned to glass bottles and premium boxes, targeting higher-end markets. Industry mentors guided him in refining marketing strategies and prioritizing target segments, while legal assistance helped secure all necessary permits. Participation in major events, including the Mandalika MotoGP, introduced the brand to international buyers.

Later, his product distribution expanded to Bali, Java, Jakarta, Bekasi, and NTT, followed by small-scale exports. Production increased to 3 – 4 kilograms of dried nests and derivative products per month, and the business met China’s minimum cleanliness score of 96 points for swiftlet nest exports.
These changes led to direct benefits for the communities around him. Local workers earned fair wages, as he always ensured. Local suppliers provided the raw materials, and all processing took place in Sumbawa, guaranteeing the economic value remained within the region.
A Change for Broader Market

Fitri, owner of Bale Seafood, faced a different challenge. Her crab-logo branding led many to believe the business sold only crab, despite its main products being dried fish and shrimp paste. The logo reflected the business’s early days but no longer accurately represented its current focus. The absence of BPOM and KKP licenses prevented the business from entering broader markets, and sales relied solely on direct transactions with her loyal buyer.

In early 2024, Fitri joined SheHacks, where she learned how brand identity shapes market perception. Later that year, she entered Bale Berdaya. She undertook a complete rebranding, updated her logo to reflect her current products, secured BPOM and KKP licensing, and developed a structured growth plan. Bale Seafood’s participation in events such as the 2024 Samota Motocross World Championship (MXGP) increased buyer confidence and created new local jobs. Fitri also began sharing her branding and marketing knowledge with other MSMEs, encouraging peer growth.
Scaling Local Potential into Competitive Stage

The progress of Owpiick Swift’s Nest and Bale Seafood illustrates how targeted support can yield measurable results. Licensing enabled entry into new markets, improved branding reshaped buyer perception, and participation in high-visibility events accelerated recognition. These shifts created employment, strengthened local supply chains, and raised Sumbawa’s standing in premium product markets.
