GENSi (Generasi Terkoneksi): Advancing AI Literacy in Indonesia Through Community-Based Collaboration

GENSi (Generasi Terkoneksi) is a national digital literacy initiative focused on strengthening AI literacy in Indonesia, particularly among students, youth, and community groups in underserved regions. The program is initiated by Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IOH) and implemented in collaboration with KUMPUL as the program delivery partner. Supported by technology partners such as Nokia, GENSi is designed to expand access to practical digital and artificial intelligence skills through a community-based approach.

Indonesia’s digital economy is projected to reach USD 360 billion by 2030. Despite this growth trajectory, disparities in access and skills persist across regions. The Indonesia Digital Society Index 2025 recorded a national score of 44.53, while data from APJII and Statistics Indonesia show that several provinces still experience internet penetration rates between 29 and 36 percent. These gaps directly affect how communities engage with digital tools and artificial intelligence in education, employment, and local economic activities. GENSi (Generasi Terkoneksi) was developed to respond to this context by grounding AI literacy in Indonesia within local realities.

Program Objectives and Learning Focus

GENSi (Generasi Terkoneksi) is built around practical objectives that connect digital skills with everyday use cases. The program targets senior high school students, university students, educators, youth communities, and micro and small business actors.

The core objectives of GENSi include:

  • Strengthening foundational digital and AI literacy for students and youth.
  • Expanding understanding of responsible and ethical AI use.
  • Developing peer learning networks through GENSi Digital Ambassadors.
  • Supporting community-level adoption of digital tools for learning and work.

Rather than focusing on abstract technical knowledge, the program emphasizes applied learning. Participants are encouraged to understand how artificial intelligence and digital tools can support education, entrepreneurship, and community initiatives in a responsible manner.

How GENSi (Generasi Terkoneksi) Is Implemented

The implementation of GENSi (Generasi Terkoneksi) follows a structured and phased process to ensure relevance and accessibility. KUMPUL plays a central role in translating program objectives into community-level action.

The program begins with a scoping study and community engagement phase. This stage maps digital literacy levels, identifies local challenges, and gathers input from education institutions and community stakeholders. The findings inform curriculum design and delivery methods, ensuring the learning materials reflect local needs.

Following this phase, GENSi delivers in-person capacity building sessions at schools, universities, and community spaces. These sessions cover key topics such as digital safety, basic artificial intelligence concepts, media literacy, and responsible AI use. Participants then continue learning through a structured seven-day online program that reinforces these topics and allows broader national participation.

A practical pilot project phase forms a core part of the learning experience. Participants develop small-scale projects using no-code tools to apply their newly acquired skills. Selected participants are appointed as GENSi Digital Ambassadors, enabling peer-to-peer knowledge sharing and sustained learning within their communities.

How to Participate in GENSi

Participation in GENSi (Generasi Terkoneksi) is open and flexible. Individuals can join through partnerships with schools and universities, community-based workshops facilitated by KUMPUL, or national online learning modules supported by Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison. This approach allows the program to reach participants across diverse geographic and socio-economic contexts while maintaining consistent learning standards.

GENSi Program Coverage Across Indonesia

Since its launch, GENSi (Generasi Terkoneksi) has been implemented across multiple regions, including Sumatra, Kalimantan, Java, Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara, and Papua. Program activities have taken place in locations such as Surabaya, Malang, Solo, Minahasa Utara, Sorong, Maumere, and Jayapura. Expansion areas include Palembang, Pontianak, Tarakan, Lombok, Sumbawa Besar, and Bima.

The program has engaged thousands of participants in its early phases and is designed to reach up to 10,000 participants nationwide. Each location is selected based on community readiness, partnership capacity, and identified learning needs.
