The Bale Berdaya Program Strengthens Sumbawa MSMEs Through Bookkeeping and Product Development Training

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are productive businesses run by individuals, groups, or small enterprises with assets up to IDR 50 million and an annual turnover of up to IDR 300 million. According to Indonesia’s Ministry of Finance, even though MSMEs operate on a small scale, they are a key foundation of the national economy, contributing 60.5% to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employing 96.9% of the workforce in 2023.

However, despite these achievements, MSMEs in Indonesia still face many challenges. Based on Infobanknews.com, Indonesian MSMEs are still behind, especially in accessing financing and increasing export capacity. To help solve this problem, PT Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara (AMMAN), in cooperation with the Sumbawa Regency Government and KUMPUL, introduced the Bale Berdaya Program. This long-term program aims to empower MSMEs in Sumbawa Regency, which has significant tourism and economic potential.

Bale Berdaya Program: Supporting Local MSMEs Through Training

The Bale Berdaya Program supports economic growth in Sumbawa Regency by empowering local MSMEs through various trainings to develop business skills and entrepreneurship. The goal is to create a sustainable and strong MSME ecosystem in Sumbawa that can compete locally, nationally, and internationally.

From July 23–25, 2024, the third in-person training was held at sub-district offices across seven target areas. The training focused on key topics: ‘Bookkeeping & Profit and Loss Calculation’ and ‘Product Development,’ tailored to the participants’ business development stages.

  • The ‘Bookkeeping & Profit and Loss Calculation’ training introduced basic financial recording, profit and loss calculations, and strategies to improve financial health for beginner MSMEs.
  • The ‘Product Development’ training targeted experienced MSMEs, focusing on product improvement strategies, market trend analysis, and brainstorming techniques to create standout products.

The practical design of the program—using case studies, simulations, and workshops—allows participants to apply their learning directly to their businesses. Additionally, intensive mentoring sessions enable participants to consult experts, receive constructive feedback, and develop actionable plans.

Positive Impact and Future Potential for Sumbawan MSMEs

The training has already delivered significant results. For example:

  • MSMEs in Sumbawa Sub-district now use digital tools to track finances and improve business decisions, replacing manual bookkeeping systems.
  • MSMEs in Ropang Sub-district diversified their product offerings and expanded their market reach to neighboring villages after the ‘Product Development’ training.

Dr. Budi Prasetiyo, S.Sos., M.AP, Regional Secretary of Sumbawa Regency, praised the program’s success, highlighting the importance of MSMEs in creating local employment opportunities and contributing to regional economic growth. He emphasized the government’s commitment to working with Bale Berdaya to improve local product quality, strengthen markets, and encourage innovation in the digital era.

Participants also shared their experiences. Sudirman, an MSME owner, said: “This training increased my knowledge and gave me practical experience. I learned that running a business is not just about selling and making a profit but also about maintaining the business through proper SOPs. This is very important for long-term success.”

The program’s success reflects its ability to empower MSMEs in Sumbawa, and participants hope it will continue to drive growth, innovation, and competitiveness for the region’s businesses.
